Holding the ball – no genuine attempt

 

A player who has not had prior opportunity must make a genuine attempt to correctly dispose of the ball, if they are able to, when they are legally tackled.

A free kick for “holding the ball – no genuine attempt” will be paid when the player does not make a genuine attempt to correctly dispose when they are able to.

If the ball is pinned to the player or to the ground, a free kick should not be paid.

  1. In this example the Frankston Bombers player has been penalised Holding the Ball as he has not made a genuine attempt to dispose of the ball. He is not considered to have prior opportunity (balanced and steady), however because once tackled his attempt to knock the ball out is minimal, he is correctly penalised.
