Dangerous Tackles

01 March 2024

A dangerous tackle is any tackle that leaves the head or body in a vulnerable position.

The key cues that we looking for are as follows;

  • Excessive rotation.
  • Arm or legs pinned
  • Legs lifted
  • Sling motion.
  • Two actions / Driving force.
  • Excessive force
  • Head is placed in a vulnerable position.

  1. The tackle from the Mt. Eliza player pins the arms of the Frankston YCW player and leaves the head vulnerable as the YCW player is driven in to the ground. Correct free kick.
  2. In this instance the Somerville player rotates the body of the Mornington player in an excessive manner leaving the head in a vulnerable position. Whilst on the minor end of a free kick, we do want this paid. We would ask players in this instance not to take players to ground.
  3. The Dromana player uses excessive force and rotation causing the Frankston Bombers player to hit his head on the ground. A correct free kick is paid. A yellow card (and report) would also be an appropriate measure in this instance.
  4. The body of the Dromana player is rotated excessively in this instance causing the head to be left in a vulnerable position. The force used is excessive. Correct free kick.
  5. The YCW player takes the ball and upon handballing is slung to the ground with force leaving his head in a vulnerable position. This is a very good free kick and is one that the umpire must ensure that his/her vision remains on the player disposing of the ball and the tackler as opposed to shifting vision too quickly.
  6. The Langwarrin player is driven into the ground with excessive force causing the head to be left in a vulnerable position. A correct free kick is paid and a yellow card would be a suitable response to this infringement.
  7. This is an unwarranted free kick for a dangerous tackle. There is no excessive rotation as the Mornington player “cuddles” the Pearcedale player to the ground, ensuring that the head is not placed in a vulnerable position. In fact the shoulder of the Pearcedale player hits the ground.
  8. The Pines player is correctly awarded the free kick as his head is left in a vulnerable position following a tackle of excessive rotation and force. A yellow card could be applied here.
  9. On the lower end of a dangerous tackle and one that could be let go, however with our cautious and conservative approach to tackles of this nature, we are comfortable in paying this, albeit at the lower end of our scale.
