Marking Contests

1. Correct MC FK. Dromana’s sole objective is to prevent ME from taking the mark. Dromana blocks ME with a straight arm allowing his team mate to mark the ball. Cue : Dromana’s eyes are not on the ball.

2. Correct MC FK. ME is clearly infringed by D. D sole intention is not to contest the ball but to prevent his ME opponent from doing so.

3. Correct MC FK. D is set to contest the mark when he is infringed from behind by ME. ME sole objective is to prevent D from marking the ball. Unduly pushes/deliberately interferes with arms.

4. Correct call of play on in MC. All players have eyes for the ball and there is no infringement in this passage other than the correct HT FK.

5. Missed MC FK. D#15 is clearly prevented (shepherded) from taking the mark by his ME opponent whose objective is not to contest the ball.

6. Rosebud is contesting the ball (eyes on the ball) and Mt. Eliza has no eyes for the ball, has a sole objective of bumping/pushing his opponent and therefore not contesting the ball. Rosebud is infringed. The correct MC FK is paid.

7. Unwarranted MC FK. Chelsea is attempting to contest the ball in this instance and barely makes contact with Somerville. If any contact has been made, it is incidental and play should be allowed to go on.

Ruck Contests

1. Missed RC FK. Chelsea has wrapped his arms around the Edithvale player thus preventing him from contesting the ruck.

2. Correct RC FK. Edithvale elects to block his Chelsea opponent thus preventing him from contesting the ruck. His sole objective is not to contest the ball.

3. Correct RC FK. Edithvale prior to contesting the ruck elects to push his Chelsea opponent in the neck thus preventing him from contesting the ruck. The contact is not considered to be incidental.

4. Correct RC FK. Mornington elects to push Tyabb in the back thus preventing him from contesting the ball.

5. Missed RC FK. Karingal has crossed the centre line prior to the umpire releasing the ball.

6. Correct RC FK. Devon Meadows walks directly into the path of the Somerville ruck thus preventing him contesting the ball.

7. Unwarranted RC FK. Somerville ruck has elected to walk into the DM player and try to claim a free kick. The DM player is entitled to position himself here as it would ordinarily be considered an unusual position for the ruck to compete in the ruck contest.
